Nomination Meeting

The Edmonton-Riverview PC Association has a new candidate as a result of the nomination meeting held on January 27, 2012 at the Crestwood Community League Hall. The new candidate is Steve Young and here is is his bio:

Steve Young

Steve YoungBorn and raised in Alberta, Steve is a fourth-generation Albertan who grew up just outside of Edmonton in the County of Strathcona. A passionate hockey player, Steve played in the Western Hockey League before he decided to attend the University of Alberta. There he won a national title playing with the Golden Bears, but it was his passion and value for education that kept him in school. After obtaining his Bachelor in Education, Steve joined the Edmonton Police Service and realized early in his career that the police could not simply arrest their way towards greater public safety and community development. Steve became involved in many important initiatives that focused on building relationships with communities in a way that allowed prevention and intervention efforts to better aid enforcement.

Steve returned to the University of Alberta, balancing shift work as an operational police officer with the demands of his academic course load.  Steve completed his Masters in Business Administration and quickly began integrating community needs and business principles to public safety efforts within the police service. Steve’s work with the police force has afforded him the opportunity to develop an impressive breadth of experience, including time spent in emergency response, investigation, community engagement, crime prevention, and information management. His current position sees him developing and managing organizational strategy aimed at reducing violence. Steve is also working on a national initiative developing data exchange standards in partnership with Public Safety Canada, RCMP, US Department of Homeland Security, Mexico, and the numerous European Union countries.

Steve has served six years as the Chair of the Audit and Finance committee on the board of directors of a very successful credit union. This forward thinking board strategically and boldly sought a merger with larger credit unions and ultimately formed Servus Credit Union in order to deliver the best value and service to its membership. This strategic decision worked because it didn’t simply focus on today’s success, but secured success into the future.

Steve’s active lifestyle and charity work merged as he twice completed the Canadian Ironman in Penticton as part of the Cops For Cancer Team, who helped raised funds for cancer research.

The diversity of his knowledge and interests are made evident through his involvement as a Criminal Law instructor at Grant MacEwan University. As an educator he has also teaching and consulted for the Alberta Solicitor General, Alberta Sustainable Resources, and Edmonton Transit on risk management, operations and strategy.

Politically, Steve has served on the Executive Committee of the Riverview Progressive Conservative Association for over 2 years, and as President for the past year.

Steve resides in the community of Crestwood, where he and his wife, Leanne, raise their two daughters, Abigail and Taylor.  Active girls, like their father, their passion for sports has led to Steve coaching the Crestwood U10 girls’ soccer team, and cheering on their hockey and ringette teams. And despite his very busy schedule, Steve still manages to carve out a Tuesday night hockey game with a group of guys from the community.
