Here is a key resolution of the
Edmonton Riverview
PC Association, followed by some of the new policies of the Progressive
Conservative Party of Alberta.
Edmonton Riverview's Resolution
BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Government of Alberta will take immediate
steps to position Alberta as the leading Province in Canada in providing
post-secondary education
-
by increasing core operating funding to Alberta's Universities,
Colleges and Technical Institutes to a level that ranks Alberta
first in funding per student in Canada and first in participation
rates in Canada;
-
by addressing the decline in accessibility due to loan and housing
availability; and
-
by establishing a comprehensive long term vision for Alberta
's post-secondary institutions.
Vision for Alberta
"A vibrant and prosperous province where
Albertans enjoy a superior quality of life and are confident about
the future for themselves and their children."
The Government of Alberta has released a strategy that will help
the province build on the successes of the past decade and serve
as a guide for government policy and direction over the next 20
years.
The strategy, entitled Today's Opportunities,
Tomorrow's Promise, emphasizes four key areas, or pillars,
crucial to the province's future:
-
Unleashing innovation — creating an environment that will
bring new technology and ideas into Alberta's traditional natural-resource
based economy.
- Leading in learning — investing in Alberta's learning
system to ensure Albertans can accomplish their educational goals.
- Competing in a global marketplace — ensuring reliable
export markets and keeping Alberta competitive.
- Making Alberta the best place to live, work and visit —
improving the quality of life for Albertans and keeping social
services responsive, modern and affordable.

Water Strategy:
Individuals, industry and communities are being called on to conserve water and
use it more efficiently as part of the province's plan to protect the quality
and quantity of Alberta's water supply. Alberta is facing significant
pressures on its water resources. Population growth, drought and agricultural
and industrial development all put stress on the province's water supply and
water systems. Water for Life: Alberta's Strategy for Sustainability addresses
water management concerns for the future. To find out more visit

Child Welfare:
Minor amendments
to Alberta's Child Welfare Amendment Act, 2003 have been introduced
in the Alberta Legislature as Bill 21, Child Welfare Amendment Act,
2004.
The amendments will clarify wording and ensure that the Act is
aligned with the Family Law Act and the Vital Statistics Act. This
means making the language consistent between the Acts and allowing
for the consolidation of some regulations. The amendments also make
allowances for the transition between the existing and new legislation.
The Child Welfare Amendment Act, 2003 is the most significant change
to Alberta's child welfare legislation in over two decades. It focuses
on delivering supportive services to families, establishing permanency
for children, involving families in decision-making and building
partnerships within the community.
The Act received Royal Assent in spring 2003 and is expected to
be
proclaimed in the fall of 2004. It will be renamed the Child, Youth
and
Family Enhancement Act at that time. The need for amendments arose
during
the process of developing regulations and preparing for implementation. |
